Botox® is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures at our spa. This is a great treatment for those looking for a way to improve the appearance of wrinkles and to prevent additional wrinkles from forming!
Botox® is actually a trade name for the neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin. It works by relaxing the contraction of muscles by temporarily blocking nerve impulses, which results in softened and relaxed wrinkles. Botox® can be used to act as a much less invasive face-lift, treating crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and thick bands in the neck. Botox® has also been utilized to treat excessive sweating, migraine headaches, and involuntary muscles spasms.
A Botox® injection is a very simple, non-surgical procedure that usually takes 10-30 minutes, depending on the amount of Botox® injected and the number of desired areas to be treated. Depending on the individual, Botox® can last up to four months. Take ten years off in 20 minutes or less at Pearl MedSpa with Botox®.
What Is A Botox Treatment Like?
Administering a Botox treatment takes only a few minutes and it is not necessary to use anesthesia. A fine needle targets only specific muscles to receive the Botox and it is done with minor discomfort.
What To Expect After A Treatment
For most patients it takes about a week to two weeks for the full effect to be seen. Alcohol should be avoided for at least a week before your treatment and anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin should be avoided to help prevent bruising.
Potential Side Effects
The most common side effect of Botox is temporary bruising. Headaches are rare, but can last for 24 to 48 hours. Eyelid drooping occurs in a small percentage of patients but resolves within three weeks or less. This side effect can be avoided by rubbing the treated area. So this should be avoided for 12 hours after the injection. Some patients choose to return home after injections and lie down for three to four hours.
Who Shouldn’t Get Botox?
Anyone how has a neurological disease, is pregnant or breastfeeding should not use Botox. Not all types of wrinkles respond to treatment, so discuss your areas of concern with your doctor before you decide on a treatment.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Depending on the age and extent of the wrinkles the Botox treatment will last about 3 to 6 months. After this period of time the muscle response will return and along with it the wrinkles will begin to form again. Bi-annual or quarterly treatments are common and help to prevent or slow the sings of time on our faces. The lines will eventually become less pronounces with time as the muscles shrink.
What Does Botox Do?
Extremely small concentrations of Botulinum toxin can be injected into humans and prevents signals from nerve cells from reaching muscles. This effectively paralyzes muscles by blocking signals to contract and cause wrinkles.
Muscles contract with the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is released from the nervous system and picked up by the muscles. The Botox injections prevent the release of acetylcholine, keeping the muscles from bunching up your skin and preventing wrinkles.
Botox Benefits For Foreheads
The forehead is one of the largest surfaces on our faces. The muscles in our foreheads move all day long and even while we sleep. When we look up, laugh, or express emotion our foreheads move and the skin creases. These creases over time develop into deeper wrinkles and without intervention turn into permanently visible lines on our faces.
Benefits Of Getting Botox In Your 20’s
Women tend to start getting wrinkles around the age of 25. The crow’s feet and elevens that form between the eyebrows are very common. Women develop wrinkles sooner than men because men have thicker facial skin and greater blood flow to the skin on the face. While simply wearing sunscreen and limiting exposure to the sun helps keep the skin hydrated and healthy, wrinkles do creep in with enough time. Studies have shown that women who start treating their wrinkle prone areas sooner avoid developing permanent wrinkles and stay looking younger, longer.
Botox on the forehead helps remove these lines and helps prevent them from coming back. It does this by blocking the message sent from the nerves to the muscles. This can greatly reduce and slow the signs of age that so many of us want to hold at bay.
Botox For Chronic Migraines
Botox treatments have their roots in cosmetic use, but the FDA has it approve for the treatment of chronic migraines as well. For about 12% of Americans these debilitating headaches are a daily fact. The intense pulsing and throbbing pain can be relieved with the application of Botox injections.
For migraines the injections are not targeted in the same spots as in cosmetic treatments but in 7 specific areas that will help prevent the symptoms of migraine headaches. Depending on individual patients the relief should last up to three months. This leads many chronic migraine sufferers to set up regular visits to help manage their pain.
